This paper develops a conceptual approach to the study of vertically integrated rural health networks. In the first part, we offer a typology of these networks, necessary to differentiate them according to key dimensions that may affect performance. In part two we propose a framework for assessing the performance of networks from several perspectives. In part three we identify measurable indicators of performance and discuss ongoing efforts to implement some of these measures.
