This study uses data obtained by a telephone survey of 1200 rural physicians in Minnesota and Oklahoma to examine rural physician experiences with and attitudes toward health maintenance organizations (HMOs). The rural physicians in our study report that they participate in HMO arrangements primarily to preserve market share. The results of this study indicate that the HMO related attitudes and experience of rural physicians resemble those of urban physicians.
